Emerging Game-Based Learning

Game-Based Learning will continue to grow and transform in the future. Gamification will likely become more common as teachers and students discover the way that classes and activities can be incentivized, while online interactive quiz tools will continue to grow and introduce new elements of game design thinking. Two different approaches to GBL that are likely to have an impact in the near future are a shift in the focus of learning games to an assessment-based game design model and student authored games as the learning process itself through digital labs, makerspaces and game jams.

This section of our OER will focus on these two different approaches to learning through games: aligning assessment with the design of learning games to meet objectives, and using game-design thinking as the means of learning, where content and concepts are indirectly learned.
