LESSON OVERVIEW

Introduction

Dying in the service of one’s country has always been considered to the ultimate sacrifice in armed conflict. During the First and Second World Wars, Canadians volunteered in the tens of thousands to protect their families, communities and “way of life.” Threats to our national security will continue to change. Canadians will be challenged to think of new and creative approaches to the complex issue of protecting our common safety.

Constructivism

This online lesson addresses these issues through a Constructivist approach. Learners actively build new meanings by combining previous experiences with new knowledge while collaborating with others in authentic contexts.

Objectives:

  • identify and explain common attitudes to volunteering for service in times of war

  • evaluate the rationale of classmates decisions on whether or not to go to war

  • assess the similarities and differences of past threats to national security to the present

  • create new strategies and perspectives to address issues of public safety and national security in the future
