Dilemma 1944 Mobile Game

A Situated Documentary on the ARIS games platform

What is a Situated Documentary?

A situated documentary is an interactive story where teams of learners use mobile technologies to investigate a historical event by visiting a real or virtual location. In this immersive environment, you will interact with virtual characters, artifacts and media to address complex, real-world challenges and issues.

Dilemma 1944 is a situated documentary that runs on the ARIS games App. In this game, you will travel back to Kitsilano High School in Vancouver during the Second World War, where you will take-on the role of a graduating student struggling to decide whether or not to join the Canadian Forces fighting in Europe and Asia.

In Vancouver? This game is best played live, at Kitsilano Secondary School: 2550 West 10th Avenue.

It can also be played remotely from any location.

Instructions: Part 1
 

1) Download the ARIS App from the Apple AppStore, create an account and search Dilemma 1944

2) Play the game with a partner or small group so that you can discuss the experience 

3) Play the game up to end of Part I before completing the task below:

 

 

 

Activity 1: Your Decision

Write a letter to your mother, or diary entry to yourself, that describes the decision that you have made whether or not to enlist in the Canadian Forces. Outline the factors influencing your decision, consider the consequences and the impact on all those who will be affected by your decision. Post your document to:

 

Activity 2: Critical Response

Read and respond to the letters or diary entries of your classmates from the perspective of a person living during the Second World War (do not use current examples). Maintain respectful dialogue as you exchange points of view with each other

 

Take a critical position by challenging, evaluating and seeking clarification from others whose positions differ from your own. 

 

Instructions Part 2

Activity 3: Reflection

1) Complete Part 2 of Dilemma 1944

2) Participate in Discussion 3 below.

 

Consider your experience playing Dilemma 1944, the content presented in the game, and the interactions you have had with your classmates in discussions 1 and 2. Respond to the following questions and comment on those of your classmates in Discussion 3:

 

  • To what extend has identifying the real people characterized in the the story and determining the consequences of their decisions influenced your position on enlistment?

  • What new or different considerations have affected your rationale or helped you to understand those of others?
